GNVQ Advanced IT - Unit 4

Element 4.1

Requires students to explain network services used for electronic communications, describe the system components and standards for electronic communication, and explain the purpose of the protocol parameters and modes of electronic communications.

PERFORMANCE CRITERIA
A student must:

  1. explain network services used for electronic communications
  2. describe the system components and standards for electronic communication
  3. explain protocol parameters and modes of electronic communications

Range

Network services:
electronic mail, conferencing, bulletin boards, file transfer, interacting with databases, direct interaction (voice, data, video)

System Components:
DTE (data terminal equipment), DCE (data circuit terminating equipment), connectors, software, cabling

Standards for electronic communications:
data representation, DCC (data circuit connections)

Protocol parameters:
transmission rates, flow control, number of start bits, number of stop bits, parity

Modes of electronic communications:

Terminal modes:          echo, wrap, terminal emulation, CR/LF

Transmission modes:   simplex, duplex, half duplex, asymmetric duplex; serial, parallel; synchronous,
                                        asynchronous

EVIDENCE INDICATORS (evidence required from each student)
A report covering the range, which:

Amplification

Electronic mail (PC1 range) this will be undertaken throughout the course by all students setting up an e-mail address which will form part of the course communication.

Conferencing (PC1 range) for example video conferencing, teleconferencing, computer moderated conferences and the web.

Direct interaction (PC1 range) e.g.. person-to-person data communications using the telephone network or null modem connection between machines.  Students will provide evidence of "lap linking" between two computers.
