Element 4.4

Requires students to demonstrate that they have accessed a network in accordance with an organisation's standards, undertaken data file processes and file management activities, modified the access rights of other users to their own files, sent and received electronic mail, and installed a new user on the network.


 PERFORMANCE CRITERIA
A student must:
 
  1. access a computer network in accordance with an organisation's standards
  2. undertake data file processes and file management activities
  3. modify the access rights of other users to own files
  4. access network applications
  5. send and receive electronic mail
  6. install a new user on the network


Range

Access:
log in; display files; access files; display applications, access applications

Organisation's standards:
user identification, security conventions; copyright requirements, procedural requirements; allocated workspace

 Data file processes:
retreive, create, amend, delete, save, protect

 File management:
copy, rename, delete, move, back up, list files, create directory structure, modify directory structure, set rights to directory structure

Access rights:
read, write; copy, delete

Install:
access server, create user name, give initial password, set initial access rights
 



EVIDENCE INDICATORS (evidence required from each student)
A demonstration, covering the range, showing that the student has:

Amplification

Computer network (element titlethe interconnection of items of computer equipment.  In this element students are likely to use local area networks (LANs)

Security conventions  (PC1 range) the contractual conditions under which network access to a computer system is provided.  This may involve signing documents, using logical names and passwords and could include physical access restrictions

Allocated workspace (PC1 range) the LAN disc area allocated to users for their free use

Protect  (PC2 range) methods by which  users are able to 'set rights' to protect their own files from access by other users.

Set rights (PC2 range) and Access rights (PC3) the facility offered on most LANs which enables users to set rights to their files and subdirectories for other users.  Examples are read, copy and write.

Electronic mail (PC5 range) electronic mail is the sending of messages, letters and other documents through an electronic system instead of using the postal service.
