Learn how

· The genesis of Fawlty Towers began when the Monty Python team booked into a hotel in Torbay where John Cleese became fascinated by the proprietor whom he described as 'the most wonderfully rude man I've ever met'

· The pilot script of Fawlty Towers was snubbed by many bigwigs at the BBC and Cleese recalls a memo which the Head of Light Entertainment had on his wall which stated 'this is a very boring situation and the script has nothing but very clichéd characters'

· The inspiration for the bemused long-term guest, The Major, was a rose-tinted version of Cleese's Latin teacher at prep school, whose overplayed reading of Three Men in a Boat had his junior audience convulsed with laughter

· Not one of the episodes from the first series ever made it into the week's top 10 viewing figures

· In an effort to make sure the second series was as good at the first John Cleese and Connie Booth spent over a month writing each episode

· The final episode ' Basil the Rat' was transmitted some six months after its original time slot due to strikes during production, so that it went out during an ITV strike and therefore gained a wider audience.

· There was a plot for a feature film which involved Basil being invited to Spain to meet Manuel's family but getting involved with a hi-jack attempt and being arrested on landing in Spain
