This site rocks! I am 14 and I LOVE Fawlty Towers, I watch them over and over again and I NEVER get sick of them! It doesn't feel like a seventies show though! When I was younger I thought that it was only made around the time Mr. Bean and The Vicar Of Dibley were made! It's timeless! Just brilliant! One of my favourite episodes is 'Gourmet Night'. Basil- 'This is tonight's menu.' Mr. Hall-'Duck with Orange? Duck with Cherry? Duck Surprise?' Mrs. Hall- 'What's duck surprise?' Basil- 'Ah, that's duck without Orange or Cherry!' Mr. Hall- 'And what do you do if you don't like duck?' Basil- 'Well if you don't like duck, ah, you're rather stuck!' Mrs. Hall- 'Well, fortunately I love it!' Keep up the great work! Kelly, Australia.

A lot of fans keep going on about making more episodes, getting the old cast back together and all that tripe. Personally I believe that the 13 episodes of Fawlty Towers was a golden moment in the history of comedy that shouldn't be tampered with. It's perfect just the way it is and trying re-create the magic would probably just turn out a second rate production that wouldn't do the original justice. It's just like Coca Cola - the original recipe is the best! Adding Lemon or Vanilla just doesn't cut it!

I think Fawlty Towers is great - can't understand what's wrong with that Torquay hotel owner though she should be happy that Cleese took her provincial guesthouse and made it (in)famous. After all nothing escapes a good sense of humour - I don't know how she can deal with difficult customers if she can't take that!!

Well: "i cant believe that fawlty towers only did 12 episodes. its the best comedy in the world" firstly they did 14, but anyway. FT will never ever do a "comeback". I think British TV has a lot to learn about comebacks after the recent Only Fools and Horses comebacks...they were alright but nowhere near the character of the original. Also, with comebacks these days writers seem to have a knack of introducing modern situations - i don't think FT has many HUGE references to the 1970s, thus making it timeless: there are few if no british sitcoms these days which are timeless in their situation and characters. i would cry if they made any sort of comeback: haven't some of the original cast passed away since? look at Only Fools...again - they lost uncle Albert and Mike from the Nag's Head before filming the com

I think fawlty towers is better than your average sitcom there are many reasons behind this one mainly being the characters and the way us as the audience can probably relate to them and see the humour behind the situation. I think we can all see elements of ourselves in the characters of Fawlty Towers and we see the typical foreigner in there as Manuel. I agree with Moon and that Fawlty Towers really is one of a kind because of it's situation and theme of being in a Hotel and because of that the theme will work well in any time period and perhaps that is why many still see the humour in Fawlty Towers, i think the writers of Fawlty Towers were talented to get 14 episodes out of Fawlty Towers when it was only situated around one theme in one building scene. Anyway, great stuff ;) - Matt

I am currently trying to plan my dissertation and am doing it on the impacts Falwlty Towers had on tourism in Torquay....and yes obviously it wasn't actually filmed in Torquay but there is a lot to say about hotels such as the Gleneagles playing on the, lets say, "Fawlty Towers heritage". I was wondering if any fellow FT lovers had any information or ideas i could perhaps use to examine whether FT had an impact, maybe in visitor numbers, fans "pilgrimages", the torquay economy etc. Actually to be honest...any comments at all!? The best came last -- "Basil the Rat". They really could have made more quality episodes. Manuel's reaction to "He put Basil in the ratatouie!" is priceless. Also when the two great minds come together in "Communications Problems" -- the "Your horse Witnit" exchange -- is superb. Look closely at Sybil in "Basil the Rat" where the health inspector is struck dumb upon viewing the rat. Sybil has all she can do to keep from cracking up! A wonderful cast in a wonderful series.

The greatest comedy ever made - Fawlty Towers is a masterpiece of comedy that is timeless and will be loved for generations. Even as I type this entry, I am watching Fawlty Towers on BBC Two before the Wimbledon highlights programme. The Builders - one of my favourite episodes flows and is hilarious throughout. However, my favourite has always been Communication Problems - completely my sort of humour and every line is brilliant. I am thinking of buying the Complete Fawlty Towers DVD, as I have them all on VHS, so if you are an owner of this product then please do post an entry on the guestbook recommending (or not) the product. I always enjoyed the programme when I was younger - but it was more sort of in the background and never as relevant as it deserved to be. Now, with the reruns on BBC2 I have discovered the true genius of Fawlty Towers. The episode on yesterday (with the hotel inspectors - not sure of the episode names as yet) was without doubt the funniest thing I've ever seen on TV. I was literally in pain from laughing so hard. The show is unique and fabulous and hilarious and amazing and should not be added to with new episodes - such a move would merely debase the originals. I cannot wait for the rest of the shows in this current run! I love Basil!

The reason for the stairs is that the set is on a flat stage. If the rise wasn't there then you wouldn't be able to give the impression of coming upstairs or going downstairs. It's the same in Father Ted if you watch it.

Ahh Fawlty Towers is just sooo great... I've bought the DVD last week and I keep over watching it. I'm 16 and tough I like modern stuff, this serie is timeless! Favourite part = Manuel cleaning up the desk in the hall while the Eland is stand up the desk: Manuel:"Helloo, I can speak English.." Major:"Uhm..ummm..um..mum thats great" Manuel:"Ah major how are you today?" Major:"I'm..'immm..'ii'm fine thank you :|" Manuel:"I can speak English...I leant it from a book" Really great work... It's a myth and allways will be, like the Montey Python films. I like John Cleese and it would be nice seeing more comedy from him! Greetz

If you have any comments to make (that includes you the site creator(s)) regarding the preservation of this iconic site please leave them here or email me. I am gathering information for a project i am doing and value any thoughts you have about the keep it/knock it down arguement! The Gleneagles surely has such an important link between Torquay and FT that it must be saved......your thoughts please. Thanks

WOW! I love Fawlty Towers...it is the greatest show ever! I am only 15 yrs old, but I have been watching the show for a few years. Ever since the first time I saw it, I loved it! Fawlty Towers is the funniest British comedy I have ever seen! On New Years Eve, they played all the episodes (I think all) from 10:00 PM to 5:00 AM. I didn't watch it all though. Man, each episode just cracks me up! My all-time fave. is Communication Problems...with the deaf guest, and the "Que Si What" and the whole "Ahem-I know NOTHING!" I laugh every time I see it! I also saw The Builders--I quoted almost every line from that episode, it was great! "Oh is you again. Now listen. He not here. How many times? Where are your ears, you great big half-wit?!?...Aaaaahhh. Mr. Fawlty!" "You are a Hideous Orangutang." I think I've seen eve

The only face without a name in the entire two series, perhaps? Don't anyone try to spot him though because you'll never be able to enjoy that bit of slapstick properly ever again. I always loved 'Fawlty Towers' and especially the fact that the name on the sign in front kept changing. It was worth tuning in again and again just to see how it would be changed around. I once made a list of them, but only remember "Watery Fowls" and "Flay Otters." Priceless!

Im'e a fan of most comedy as long as its quality. For me F T is an example of a perfect comedy series, nevermind O F A H coming first in a pole and Black adder 2nd, dont make me laugh, well Fawlty Towers does, over and over again on all levels, the nearest to its quality recently has to be The Office another CLASS comedy.

I dont know who wrote that account saying that payne is a superior update of fawlty towers. Payne is not fit to lick the boots of FT on any level, ime from the uk and have seen the odd scene in Payne and its a mockery, very farcical but without the sofistication of its superior, that is FT. the writing of FT is of a greater quality with mopre intricate linking scenes. Payne is just a poor substitute of FT, end of story!!!

For gods sake, they only showed 12 eps on tv but they made 13 but got rid of one, they had 6 in each series, 1975 & 1979.

Fawlty Towers is the best! John Cleese is an absolute genius! He's quite cute too hehe. Basil rocks, and if i could choose any fictional character to actually exist in reality, it would have to be Basil! Feel free to email me.

Living in Springfiels USA, we think that "Them Pisstons", is the best comedy. Especially the spiky-haired kid Brat. We often see his image in the back of pickup trucks. He would be a "Pisstol" but there is no "L" in the cartoon's title. As Eric Idle would say, I'm pullin' ya leg. Nudge, Nudge, Wink, Wink, Say No More! (Just making a joke about the signage at Farty Towels - in case you missed the anagran of "The Simpsons") Happy Belated 30th!!!!!!!!!!!!

I think what makes FT so great, besides of course the great writing of John and Connie, is that not one second in the show is wasted. There is NO dead time where actors are just reciting lines by rote as in today's sitcoms. Every moment is choreographed and has a meaning. Every glance and look adds nuance to the plot. Just so very well produced!

For collectors... Keep your eyes peeled on e-bay in about 6 weeks - there will be a very rare Corgi model of the Austin and Basil in a collectors box reading 'Flowery Twats' instead of 'Fawlty Towers'. There were only a few printed in error before the BBC pulled the plug on this particular package. E-mail me if you have any queries.

Fawlty Towers now available ON DEMAND via Akimbo. A bargain! First Episode (Touch of Class) is free, all the others available for $0.49 for 30-day rental. You need a Windows Media Center device and an Akimbo susbscription... but the Akimbo subscription is free for first 30 days, so you can watch any episode you want for the rental fee of $0.49 each if you're a new Akimbo subscriber with a Media Center device. www.akimbo.com (YES, I do work for Akimbo, so if this posting is inappropriately commercial for this site, feel free to delete with my apologies. Thought this community would want to know. I'm a huge FT fan myself.)
