Calderglen Woods Eastkilbride

The Calderglen is situated on the Eastern Edge of the town of Eastkilbride in Scotland. The Glen was carved out by glacial action some 50,000 years ago and is named after the river Calder which flows through it.The glen is heavily wooded and provides cover for a variety of species like deer, rabbits, foxes, stoats and badgers.I have seen herons, dippers, pied wagtails, wild ducks and greenfinches to name but a few of the birds that live there. The river supports trout, sticklebacks, catfish, frogs and newts. There are many spectacular waterfalls in the glen which freeze solid in winter. The sides of the glen rise some 100-150 feet above the river in places. The ruins of Calderwood castle stand in the north end of the woods and to the east lies farmland. The picture on this page is of the entrance to the nature trail through the Glen in the St.Leonards district of the town taken one very cold winter. I have included some pictures of the frozen waterfalls and the surrounding farmland.Click on the hyperlinks to see the pictures and some further descriptions or if you are running a browser which supports the JAVA 1.1 virtual machine, use the image viewer applet to see the photographs.
