We would also like to give a big thanks to our sponsors for the weekend DGT Tax Services.

As well as trophies for all winners and runners-up a new award was presented for the first time. South African Knight Visit to Carlisle Squash Club

9th January 2009

Cumbria squash fans were treated to a great evening when the South African Knights Touring Team visited Carlisle Squash Club as part of their 24th Tour to the United Kingdom.

The South African knights whose ages ranged from 19 to 27 years old took on a Carlisle Squash Club Select side whose age range was “considerably” wider than that of their opponents but the details of that will not be divulged to save any embarrassment.

First on court was Carlisle’s Graeme Coulthard who took on the Knights Captain Munro Montanus, in an entertaining opener to the evening Graham was defeated by three games to love.

The following match between Tony Hetherington from Carlisle and the Knights 19 year old Richard Dodd also resulted in  a three games to love victory to the South African.

The evening continued with Carlisle’s experienced Dave Box tackling the much younger Christopher Cherry. Dave took the first game 11-8 but in the end the fitness of Christopher overcame the experience of David and the match ended in a three one victory to the Knights player.

Carlisle’s youngest player Paul Bell then took on Christo Potieger. In a very entertaining tight match Carlisle Select gained their first victory of the night when Paul eventually beat his opponent 3-1.

The final game was between Carlisle’s Michael Tinning and the Knights Jan-Hendrik Mulder and provided a fitting end to the evening with another tight and hard fought game which the Knights player won 3-1.

The final result of a great evening of high class squash was victory to the South African Knights by four matches to one

After the match the Knights were presented with Cumbria County Badges as a token of appreciation by Tom Armstrong,   Chair and Secretary of Cumbria Squash

Below are South African Knights l-r Christopher Cherry, Christo Potgieter, Richard Dodd, Jan-hendrik Mulder and Munro Montanus.

Carlisle Select l-r Paul Bell, Mike Tinning, Tony Hetherington, Dave Box and Graeme Coulthard,

Carlisle Squash & Rackets Club win North West Gold Squash Development Club of the Year Award for 2007/08

The North West Award at Gold level for 2007/08 has been won by Carlisle Squash & Rackets Club. Our thanks to Ronnie Bell the Manager/Head Coach and Trevor Musson the Chair who has been tremendous in developing the programme at the club, especially school-club links.

The England Squash Development Club of the Year Awards are designed to recognise and reward achievement and progress in those clubs that are committed to the England Squash Club Charter, Sport England’s Club Mark.

Sport England’s Club Mark is one of the sports most exciting initiatives, providing opportunities to develop clubs, coaches, volunteers and players. Club Charter has been introduced to ensure we as a governing body have common criteria to ensure good practice runs through all our development schemes that provides a focus around which England Squash, Sport England and Sports Coach UK can work together to support good practice in clubs working with children and young people.

The National awards are presented at Bronze, Silver and Gold level with all three winners shortlisted by England Squash for entry into the prestigious Central Council for Physical Recreation (CCPR) Annual Sports Club of the Year Awards.

On Monday 22nd September John Gibson the Area Squash Manager for the North West presented Ronnie Bell with a framed certificate and a cheque for £200 for their outstanding contribution to squash at the club over the past twelve months.
