Screens

The timbre of the slamming of a screen door,
early September '72:
noise like no other kind of door closing, spring

twangs, snaps, a
light frame slaps
against a jamb

and for a caught breath crickets stop singing
while loud sound fades into the sudden hush.

It is still summer.
No need yet to take down screens and put up
storm doors that will keep out the coming cold.
