JANUARY 2012 UPDATE Dear Members and Players May I wish you all a
Happy New Year and lots of success in your chess this new year.
To those of you who braved the weather over the last couple of weeks the club
was open and many of you were treated to a couple of
coaching sessions from Stephen Gordon. A big thanks to Stephen he is as you
know our own home grown Grandmaster and it’s always
wonderful to see him in the club. He is always in great demand to share his
time and expertise and we wish him a great season. 2011 was a time in
which some of our senior players enjoyed the experience of parenthood. Our
congratulations to Adam and Crystal on the birth of their daughter and also
to Andy Lewis and Keiko on the birth of their son just after Christmas.
Everyone is doing fine and we wish them well, no doubt the sleepless nights
will be something to look forward too. Broad Green Quickplay The Broad Green Quickplay will be held on Saturday the 14th
January. This is an important event particularly for beginners and all U9 and
U11 players need to make themselves available for
this day. We will be booking a coach for the day meeting at the Oldham
Chronicle Offices on Union Street. In addition, All players who are interested
in playing either for Oldham, Greater Manchester or who wish to be considered
for an England place should attend. We will send out letters for final
details but the coach will be full so book a seat with me starting from this
Thursday. The times are approximately 9. 30 - 7.00 and the cost to enter and
subsidise the coach is £10. Refreshments are available with a limited number
of places for parents. Elite Coaching Programme Our elite coaching
groups have been a great success for a number of our younger and ambitious
players with our top coaches playing a full part every week. This is strictly
by invitation only and will continue to be available to our rapidly improving
players many of who already play 4NCL, County and
the Manchester leagues. Phil Adams and Dave Hardy are the principal coaches
and ensure that invitations are directed to the most appropriate players.
Obviously the groups will be changing as new players press forward for a
place. This is inevitable and players who at this time leave these groups may
do so for a variety of reasons such as studies etc. This doesn’t mean they
won’t be invited to all the club activities and I know that their progress
and involvement will be monitored. Everyone is important at all levels and
all have a role to play. 4NCL News This years 4NCL has started
well with a win in the first weekend. We are fielding a strong 1st
team on the weekend of the 14th and 15th as well as a
strengthened 2nd team. These players will be contacted with
regards to all final arrangements this week. The
dates for this year’s matches are 14thand
15thJanuary, 11th-12th February, 31st March-
1st April, 5th,
6th and 7th May. This squad is by invitation only. English Primary School Chess Association (EPSCA) Oldham will be
entering an U9 and U11 team into the National
Championships. The dates for the events are; U9’s Zonals March 10th in the Cheshire, North Wales U9 Final April 28thnd U11 Zonals March 17th Lancashire U11 Finals May 12th.
Northamptonshire. Transport will be
provided. To make the Oldham squad attendance at the Broad Green event is
important. How are the
Manchester League teams doing? The answer is not
bad at all. The 1st team although it has lost one match is still
in a position to contest for the championship. The 2nd, 4th
and 5th teams are at the top of their respective
leagues whilst the 3rd team has only played two matches and
remains undefeated. The 6th team is competitive and
continues to provide some good individual results as young players continue
to improve. So lots to play for
in the new year. Can I ask all players to keep their captains informed asap
of any problems they may have. This makes the captains job a lot easier. Stockport League A big thank you to
Ahmed for his help in running this new team. It is proving to be a worthwhile
venture with lots of young players from the elite groups making good
progress. Players such as Jack Mundy, Robert McLean, Lucas Casey, Jay Taylor,
Brandon Hall, Becky Kerton and a range of other
have all shown themselves to be improving. This was also reflected in the
performances of individuals who played in the Bury Quickplay
before Christmas. (You get better by
playing a lot of chess, ask Tim Hilton). We will be looking
to organise a day out at the next quickplay which I
believe will be at Stockport. So keep your eyes open for more details. Venue and Match Night Changes – Teams in the
MCF and Stockport & District Leagues From 7th February
2012 Stockport Chess Club will be playing at: Cheadle Hulme

December 1st 2011 starting at 7.00pm. Dear Players and
Parents, We are holding our
presentation evening at the club on the above date. Our Grand Prix winners will be presented
with their prizes as well as the trophies to the captains of the winning
league and cup teams. This year we feel it is important to recognise a number
of our international and county players as they have done so well. In
addition, the club player or person of the year will also be announced. We would like to
make the evening something for everyone so we will be running three five
minute competitions, one for our older more experienced players one for the
middle group, and
one for the younger beginners section. It will be £1 to enter and we should have an enjoyable time. Please make the
effort to be there as it’s important to help us organise the competitions. Could I ask parents
if they could help us with refreshments and contribute some savouries or
confectionary as they have so generously done in the past.
It would be greatly appreciated if you could and of course come and stay if
you can. Dare I say even have a go in the beginners section. If you are able to
help or contribute let me know as it does help with the evening. Regards

No: 07850015163 m. JULY UPDATE I
thought that at this time of the year it would be a good opportunity for me
to let members know what is currently taking place and what we hope to do for
the new season. British
Chess Championships 2011 The
British Chess Championships commence on 24th July to
6th August in Sheffield with various events taking place. Pop along
and you may find it of interest the venue is Ponds
Forge international Sports Centre, Sheaf Street, Sheffield S1 2BP. You
may have already entered or decide to play in one of the events then please
provide us with news of your results. Gradings. We
are waiting for the current grades to be published. We expect them to be
issued just prior to the British Championships at the end of July. They
are important as they allow us to place our current players into a pecking
order for the 2011/12 season. If you haven’t yet got a grade don’t worry we
will be providing you with an internal club grade to help you measure your
progress. Meeting
of Organisers. I
would like to invite all the clubs adult organisers to a meeting on Thursday July 28th at 9.00pm in the club.
The agenda will be to discuss the forthcoming season and member’s
availability in supporting our activities. This is not just to identify team
captains but to establish everyone’s willingness or interest in supporting
the club. If you haven’t as yet been involved but maybe interested please
attend. You won’t have jobs dumped on you. It’s meant to be an
opportunity to discuss what we all want to do and pull together to achieve
our agreed goals. Manchester
Leagues. Firstly,
it’s not my intention to pre-empt the meeting on the 28th. Last
year we had six teams in the Manchester league. This included a successful girl’s team and a 5th team that won its division. In
addition our 1st team were 1st Division Champions. The
idea of the leagues is to make sure all our players are provided with
sufficient opportunities to play chess at a competitive level. We are
currently exploring our involvement for the first time of one of our teams in
the Stockport league. This is likely to be for our younger developing
players. We will need additional support from parents to help with
arrangements we thinks it’s well worth looking into. 4NCL
News. We
will be entering two teams into the 4NCL this year in Division 3. We will be
entering the southern section the same as previous years. The reasons being
the poor quality of the northern sections and the travelling differences are
minimal. We have also looked at the Junior 4NCL and feel that it isn’t
suitable for the players at their current stage in their development. I will
be contacting all eligible players and asking them about their commitment
shortly in a separate e-mail. Grand
Prix. 2011. You
may or may not know that the club is open throughout the summer holidays. We
arrange a six round event to span the holidays. The
club’s Grand Prix starts on Thursday July 28th. This is a
tournament within the club that provides all players’ even beginners and Mums
and Dads the opportunity to be a winner as well as improve or establish a
grade for you. The
competition is split into graded bands. This means that you should always be
playing players who you have a fair chance of beating. So it’s not done on
age its ability. This means that if you’re a dad and a beginner that’s the
group you will play with. So
what if you’re on holiday? Well, tell us when you are going and you will be
entitled to two weeks with a half point bye for each week. Hence, you’ve
scored 1pt for lying on a beach. For the remaining four weeks you can make
your challenge. It costs £5 to enter the competition and its spread out over
6 weeks. Results must go to John Walton to be recorded. 30 min each on the
clock. Prize
money is split evenly between each section. Everyone is invited to play so
from this Thursday I would like to start taking entries. Players

know and remember to return them for others. Next
Seasons Gtr Manchester County Scene. We
have a number of players who will be invited to play for the county team this
coming season. The county will be running an U12, U13, U14, U16 and U18
teams. I will keep you informed of dates so you can organise your diaries. Coaching arrangements. The
most promising players in the club quickly realise the importance of good
quality and systematic coaching. You can only learn so much by playing.
You can learn how to lose and not know how to reverse the process hence, the
need for a good coach. They prepare work and help you as individuals to
become a winner. As many of you know we have an elite group who are coached
in the back room each week by Phil Adams. We will be inviting another
intermediate group to start work on a Thursday at the club with Dave Hardy
from September. These players will be receiving individual invitations
from Dave in the near future. If you are invited it will be because of your
achievements this year and will hopefully give you that added boost to help
you take on new challenges this season. If any members have additional news or wish to share information
please let me know. Regards

Stephen Rigby Megafinal - North West Date 14th May 2011 Venue Oldham Hulme Grammar, Chamber Road, Oldham OL8 4BX. Dear Members, As
many of you may know we are hosting this years Megafinal at Hulme Grammar. This event is one of our
major fund raising events for the club. The money raised is used to enter our
all of our players into a wide range of competitions including adult and
junior leagues. It also subsidizes transport and general overheads for the
club. So the money raised benefits everybody from 1st team players
right through to our U9’s. We don’t ask members to pay annual membership fees
as do other clubs but occasionally I do ask members and families for some
support. On the 14th we do need some volunteers to help serve
refreshments as well as families donating food / baking / sandwiches etc.
that we can sell on the day. If there are any adult players who can help with
the running of a section that would also prove most useful. Could you try and
give sometime to support the event and let me know if you can help either
through emailing me or speaking to me at the club. Lastly,
can I remind all club members who are playing in the Megafinal
to make sure that they get their entry form/fee and details to me asap. Contact S.Rigby 07850015163. April/May Update. Since
the last update it’s not surprising that a huge amount of chess has taken
place resulting in a range of ups and downs in terms of results and
individual performances. Club
Library. The
new club library is now well established and more importantly well used. If
you have any chess books or magazines that you would like to donate please
bring them in and add to this resource. If you are borrowing any books just
let me know and remember to return them for others. Manchester
Leagues. A
mixed bag of results as you would expect over a busy season. Still a number
of important issues to be resolved in the final games so will everyone make
themselves available to captains. Thanks to everyone involved. There has been
some excellent progress made by some individual players this season which
should be reflected in the new grading lists. Megafinal News. The
Megafinal will be held on May 14th at Hulme Grammar School as North Chadderton School our usual venue, is being rebuilt and
is likely to be out of commission for some time. I know some of
you will be entering through school but others might not have that
opportunity. If you are a secondary school player and a club member drop me a
line to remind me that you want to enter through the club. The entry fee is
£12 this year. Girls
Team. The
Girls team was a great success with some
notable performances throughout the season. Building on their success we hope
to enter a girl’s only team into the Manchester League this forthcoming
season. A big thank you to Roger Glover who, with support from parents and
his squad of players, was able to ensure the season went with few if any
hitches. 4NCL
news. The
final weekend for this season is rapidly approaching. Lots of issues still to
resolve. Everyone is looking forward to the challenge. I have received
fantastic support from all my squad of 2nd team players. It really
has been enjoyable sharing time with such excellent company. Excellent team
spirit and lots of fun between matches. We have had some great individual
triumphs. Tim Hilton has been my player of the season. His attitude,
commitment and rewards have reflected what 3C’s are all about. Some of you
may have noticed the regular attendance of a number of members who have
joined us this season. This group of players such as Jamie, Andrew, Daniel,
Sam, Ahmed have all chosen to play for us and we warmly welcome them. They,
along with our other improving juniors such as Lance, Abdullah and Jason, are
benefitting from the high quality coaching provided each week by Phil Adams.
I have been impressed by everyone commitment. Excellent to see Daniel being
selected for England and Abdullah joining the junior squad. It would be wrong
of me not to mention Alannah Williams who is one of
our best young girl players and who I hope will be invited to work alongside
these players in the future. Town
Team U11, U9 news. The
U9 and U11 Oldham town teams won their way to the English Championship finals
again through the efforts of many but particularly Dale who has put in a lot
of ground work coaching the squads. I know he would always want them to
be better and achieve more but without his efforts we would indeed struggle. The
U11’s will be doing battle in the final in Northants on Saturday May 7th.
Please make a date in your diaries. It is important that Dale and those
involved in coaching players through the year are supported for this event.
It’s difficult enough as the smallest association taking on the counties. I
hope to see many of them practicing tomorrow at 3C’s. More details for the
event closer to the day. Club
Grand Prix 2011. The
club will be holding its Grand Prix starting in July and going through the
summer holidays. Same rules as last year. Prizes for U8, U9, U10, U11, U12,
U15 and Open age. The prize money will be equal for each section. Out of the
six rounds you can have two byes for holidays but you must let us know
beforehand. The entry fee will be £5. More details later. Next
Seasons 5th Team. I
am already on the lookout for next year’s new 5th team. I have no
doubt Abdullah, Jason and Lance will be moving onto greater things. That
leaves me with space in my squad. However, we will be having a club
meeting with captains quite soon to discuss teams and squads for next season.
We are also looking at two areas for development considering playing in the
Bury and Rochdale leagues as well as attending the local junior congresses If
any members have additional news or wish to share information please let me
know. Regards
