Why Bob ?

In the past when I had not worked so far from home, I had found it quite practical to use an old classic car as my every-day car. I had used a 1935 Austin 7 Ruby for 4 years, a 1934 Hillman Minx for 3 years and a 1963 MkII Jaguar for 6 years.

I was coming to the end of a long contract that required me to work in Swindon (while living in Southampton), and I expected to be able to get all my future contract work in Hampshire. I had decided to consider using my club car as my normal transport, possibly even allowing me to dispose of my modern car.

At the time I had a Rolls-Royce Silver Shadow and I thought that it would be a bit OTT for me to turn up at contracts (I work as a contract computer programmer) in a 'Rolls-Royce'. However I concluded that if I could find a Bentley that did not shout the normal Rolls-Royce styling and was not mint condition, then I had a chance of convincing people that I was just a classic car enthusiast and was not trying to shove my perceived wealth up their noses.

This train of though excluded all Spirit of Ecstasy badge'd Rolls-Royce's, all the Bentley S series, anything too grand and a lot of the special bodied 'Hooper' type styles.

I concluded that the Bentley Mk.VI or R-Type may suit. I was very keen to keep (or even retro-fit) as many labour saving comforts as possible, so I was only going to consider automatics. As far as I know, no Mk.VI's were automatics, so an R-Type it was going to be. (I was also happier with the bigger boot and it's resulting shape.)
