SANTORINI, GREECE An island in the Grecian chain. Vampires were so rife on the island that Greeks would say "Send a vampire to Santorini" as we would talk of "Taking coals to Newcastle"! In 1717, a distinguished French botanist, Joseph De Tournefort, stated that "throughout the whole archipelago, there is no orthodox Greek who does not firmly believe that the devil is able to re-energise and revitalise dead bodies". Now called Thera, one explanation for the very well-preserved bodies is the volcanic soil, which would keep them intact longer and slow decomposition. Source: The UnXplained, edited by Damon Wilson
