The Christmas Dove
© Chris Benham, 1999

This is my contribution to the ’99 festive season. I wanted to write something a little ‘different’ to the usual poems and songs that come out at such a special time of year…….

‘Twas in a star-lit stable,

Amongst animals wild,

That a virgin so pure,

Bore a most special child.

And the angels from Heaven all sang out in joy,

For the birth of our God, in the form of a boy.

And high in the rafters

In the warm manger’s thatch,

As Jesus was born,

So a baby dove hatched.

And as shepherds and kings followed the celestial guide,

The young dove flew down to the Son of God’s side.

And as no-one was watching,

On the side of the bed,

A tiny hand reached

and blessed the snow-white bird’s head.

So with it’s God-given mission, and with strong wings unfurled,

The Christmas Dove left to spread love round the world.

And many years later,

Sensing terrible loss,

A pure-white bird flew,

Onto Jesus’ cross.

And long into the night, Our Lord and the dove,

Spoke of how man had learned of forgiveness and love.

And as sun followed moon

The little bird cried,

For with all his work done,

The Son of God died.

The dove fell to the ground, his body all worn,

And into Jesus’ house, his soul would be re-born.

The ages have passed,

And man has now learned,

That the art of forgiveness

Is a treasure most yearned.

And far up above, at God’s pearly gates,

The dove and our Father, patiently wait.
