Virtually Here
 © Chris Benham, 1999

What can I say about this piece of poetry? Virtually Here was written for a special friend I made over the internet. As time goes by, you get to know someone better and better, learning of their fears and hopes. As I got to know this person, so I learned of their troubles. I wrote this in an attempt to show that, in the best way I can, I am there for them. This person lives on the other side of the Atlantic and as a result, we will, likely as not, never get to meet eachother. The person in question knows who they are and the words hold as true today as they ever did.

Virtually Here

The most important thing a friend can give, they say,

is and understanding ear.

For when you need to talk to me,

Know that I’m virtually here.

Through cyberspace we meet new friends

who live both far and near.

For when you need me close to you,

Know that I’m virtually here.

Though life may throw a thousand knives

you needn’t always fear.

For when you need protection,

Know that I’m virtually here.

In me, you’ve got a life-long friend,

who finds you oh so dear.

For when you need a helping hand,

Know that I’m virtually here.

And when you’re feeling sad and down

try not to shed a tear,

For open arms will hold you, and

Know that I’m virtually here.

For one day when all things conspire,

to allow me to be there.

The arms, the hands the comforting words

Will be more than virtually here.
