What is BitTorrent |
When a file is made
published via HTTP the cost of the upload is born by the uploading connection. However, with BitTorrent, after the file has been uploaded for the first time then the source can disconnect and leave it to all the downloaders to share the file between themselves.

| How does it work | The file is split into small packets of approximately one quarter of a megabyte. Individual downloaders will download a packet at a time whilst simultaneously uploading any packets they may have that others require. The control of packet distribution is done by something called a tracker which decides on the next packet required for a particular downloader and connects them to a peer where that packet is available. | |

| In Brief | BitTorrent will result in a file being spread out across many computers that all share between each other under control of the tracker.. Some of the computers will have the complete file, some may not. An individual downloader will complete his file download from all the others whilst simultaneously uploading any bits of the file already downloaded. |
