White Noise

White noise is a signal that contains a flat power spectral density giving an equal level of sound throughout. For it's use in a tinnitus masking or retraining therapy the bandwidth of the white noise is limited to the hearing range of the human ear.

White noise gets its name from the term white light, whereby the power spectral density of the light is even across the visible light spectrum. Think of it as; all the colours of light combined to form white light and all audible frequencies combined to form white noise.

White noise generators can be purchased, but nowadays are relativeley expensive when compared to white noise recordings that can be easily played back on a variety of personal stereos, mp3 players etc.
