MARSH FAMILY TREES

MARSH FAMILIES OF FAVERSHAM

To Home Page
To Trees Introduction

I am trying a new approach in presenting a Faversham page. Usually I do extensive personal research of original sources, but in this case I am presenting the beginnings of research by other persons to families with a connection to the Faversham area, in the hope that readers may be able to help in the development of a set of trees. I have included information already in my database, from the 1881 census, two marriage licence entries and an entry from the Kent Hearth Tax of 1664. Regular readers should see how a family tree can grow when available information is gathered together and individual efforts are combined. Do you have information about Marsh families with a connection to Faversham? Be a part of this exercise and e-mail me, Bill Marsh, at: fmarsh@allstream.net  Kudos to all those participating - A page is waiting for those submissions, I will enter  names and details at  Kudos.  At this point I think it appropriate to mention that Faversham is the home of Britain's oldest brewery which was founded in 1698 by Capt. Richard Marsh of the Cinque Ports Militia, a mayor of Faversham, who founded his brewery over an artesian well in the town. The brewery is now known as Shepherd-Neame Brewery. You can visit the Brewery Web site by clicking Brewery If you wish to learn something about the Cinque (pronouced 'sink') Ports use your browser to visit any one, or all, of a number of sites you will find.

Toward the end of 2002 a flurry of activity occurred, it is fitting that a report on this experiment should be made. I believe it can be declared an unqualified success. Following is a chart showing researchers of one family that have been brought together.

I have now found it necessary to set up individual pages for three families, these can be accessed by clicking the links under "Where to Next."

Additional Notes

Marriage Licences
From a transcription of Canterbury marriage licences.

"Marsh, Richard, of Faversham, ba., and Mary Bax of Holy Cross, Cant., spr.
At H. C., or S. M. Bredin, Cant. or Goodnestone. July 2, 1715"
Could this Richard have been the Brewery founder or his son? Something for
somebody to work on.

"Marsh, Abraham, of Lyminge, widr., and Eliz. Reely of Folkestone, spr.,
At Faversham or Preston n. Faversham. May 30, 1721"
Why did they marry in Faversham?

Kent Hearth Tax, 1664
There were no Marsh households listed for Faversham, but there was one for the Isle of Sheppey:
"Warden Borough, Francis Marsh, 5 hearths chargeable."
This would indicate a person of means. Could this have been the Brewery founder?
