Born in 1963 Andrew Davidson studied at Bournemouth & Poole College of Art
& Design. After leaving college he worked for a couple of years to raise money to
start his own studio which he set up in 1985. He lives in Dorset and was elected a fellow
of the Dorset Craft Guild in 1987. He currently teaches part time at Bournemouth &
Poole College of Art & Design and at Canford School. Early sources of inspiration
included work of Lucie Rie, Hans Coper and Ian Godfrey. Visits to Lucie Rie led to the
adoption of raw glazing and an abiding interest in a number of her techniques. Other
influences include artifacts worn by time and use from past cultures. Andrew works in
stoneware and porcelain, making one off pieces mainly vases, bottles and bowls, each group
of work evolving from work that has gone before. All pots are thrown on
the wheel, often shaped after turning and raw glazed when bone dry, building up layers of
slip and glazes to create colours and textures. Metal oxides added to the clay and
different coloured pieces thrown together create spirals or areas of colour. All work is
fired once to 1260° C. in a gas fired kiln. . |
