Postcard 98-03
Pride of the Royal Navy, "H.M.S. Hood" and "H.M.S. Repulse". Two famous British ships (both built by John Browns at Clydebank) that escaped the postcard publisher. I managed to obtain pictures of Hood and Repulse in the canal to create the card. The transit on July 24th set many records including the highest toll paid up to that time of $22,399 for the mighty Hood. To avoid damage to locks and ship, outrigger poles were attached to the vessel to give an idea of her extended beam caused by her below water armored belt. Happily her and the Repulse went through unscathed. Both ships however were sunk early in the war, the Hood with only three survivors on May 24th 1941 and Repulse less than seven months later in the Far East.
