The White Hart stands on the quaintly named Market End, facing Coggeshall's Market Hill. The most easterly bay is reputed to be all that remains of the 1420 Guild Hall - it is also reputed to be haunted by a small figure dressed in blue velvet!

Today's White Hart is made up of several earlier buildings, one of which was built in 1526 for Robert Paycocke, a member of the wealthy family of wool merchants.

By 1675 it had become an inn and for many years was a stopping place for the coaches running between London and the towns of this region.

Today it is a very fine hotel, noted for comfort and the high quality of its cuisine.
