On the outskirts of town is the impressive Bowes Museum. Housing a massive array of antiquities, this French-style chateau has connections with the Royal Family and has one of Britain's finest collections of European art, furniture, ceramics and textiles as well as items of local interest. The Bowes is open most days of the year between 11am and 5pm.

The ruins of12th Century Egglestone Abbey are located in a picturesque setting above the River Tees, 1.5miles south-east of town. Admission is free and the site is open to the public during the hours of daylight.
