The River Tees flows through here under a stone road bridge by the cattle market, and the famous Pennine Way joins the river bank at this bridge for it's journey north-west.
The village was developed significantly in the 19th century by the affluent London Lead Mining Company.
Willow Cottage is situated in Town End at the eastern end of the village in a quiet turning.
