MOUNTAIN SEARCH & RESCUE TEAMS were based at Coldwell in search for 3 boys, aged 9, 12 and 13 missing on local moors, the children were later found safe & well after 20 hours. More than 100 people helped with the search, including three mountain rescue teams, two police helicopters, officers from Lancashire and West Yorkshire Police and dog search teams. The children are believed to have been from a care home in Colne. The children had been on a field study trip in the local area and deliberately disappeared before being found by police in Burnley.
Coldwell was pleased to offer its facilities to assist police and search teams.
LOTTERY CASH will open the doors of the centre to a wider audience. The award of £300,000 will enable Coldwell to extend its facilities.
We have just found out that we have now raised the necessary income through funding to start the major building and refurbishment project at Coldwell.
We have been successful in obtaining funding through the Big Lottery, SRB6 and NRF in Pendle. The project will hopefully start in January 2005 for six months and we aim to have an opening ceremony by the end of summer. Our thanks go out to those who have funded the project.
The transformation to the building and facilities will be monumental!! We will have modern facilities throughout the building, which will increase in overall size by over 40%. Modern and well equipped training rooms, excellent office accommodation plus new and modern bedrooms with en-suite facilities. We will be installing a lift and will make vast improvements in disability access throughout the centre including a covered walkway thus enabling better movement throughout the building.
Commenting on the Lottery Award, Councillor Stuart Caddy, Leader of Burnley Borough Council said "Burnley Council very much welcomes the Lottery's decision to support the development of the Coldwell Inn Activity Centre. Coldwell is a very important and valuable resource for Burnley and East Lancashire. I know of many residents, groups and youth clubs who have gone up to the Centre to bring people together from different backgrounds and build links and connections between them."
Speaking after a recent visit to the Centre to present an Investors In People award, United Utilities chief executive John Roberts said "Facilities like the Coldwell Centre play a vital role in the future of our region. Our diversity is our strength and the cohesion programme underlines that view in an accessible way. We are delighted by Coldwell’s success in securing community funding and we will continue to offer the Centre our support.
