OBITUARY

THE LIFE AND TIMES OF...

Sid Owen

Welcome to St Michaels. This is an independant site conceived and run by Old Michaelean Colin O'Leary (see side menu) until his death on Good Friday 2002.It is now administered by myself Simon Curtis, an old boy from the last Hitchin intake. I hope you enjoy the site and I would be happy to answer any questions you may have regarding the content or the school. Towards the foot of this page there is a Recent Update section where the latest additions are to be found.

Click here for Reunion report, Photos, and David Luckham's speech

St Michael's College was a Catholic school for boys, which was administered by priests from two religious orders. The Edmundians from 1903 to 1925 and from 1925 to 1968 by the Assumptionists. It was also a prominent establishment in the small market town of Hitchin, Hertfordshire during those 65 years. The main building is pictured below. It now does not exist, since it was demolished in the early Seventies and the site was re-developed as the local headquarters of the Hertfordshire Constabulary. The Edmundians fared better in the USA, where in 1904 another section of the order set up St Michael's College, Vermont which is highly successful, with a present student level exceeding 1900 and annual fees in excess of £16k

The school moved to a brand new premises in Stevenage where it continued until 1985 when it was demolished and the boys merged with St Angela's to become the John Henry Newman School, Stevenage. You can visit the school website by clicking on the name on the left.

The Assumptionists have continued to administer to the Parish of Hitchin and maintain close links with JHN school. More details can be found on the Parish Website . Like the Edmundians they have also had success in the USA their website is www.assumptionists.org

It is hoped that this website will also revive some memories and bring together former and long lost College friends.

If you have any of information about or photographs of the College, its staff or pupils, that you feel may improve the site, please consider submitting them. In any event, please look in, from time to time, as it is intended to try to add and improve the contents of the website.

Historical sites like this need input from visitors, unlike sites which generate daily news. So please consider contributing, if you can and your input will be very much appreciated. E-mails to this site can be sent by clicking on the Contact link. I would be grateful if you could also report any errors that you find.

A search facility has been added below, which can be used to search for former staff and pupils of the College and other references in this site. Search Tips I can also offer a limited search for Old Boys not listed on the directory. Send me a mail with with your query.

RECENT UPDATES

  • I must apologise for my lack of work on the site. I have experienced a great deal of technical problems, both hardware and software related, but I am pleased to say things are now running smoothly.
  • I have added an obituary page to list the passing of our old friends.
  • Added Mick Wright to the directory.

NEWS

There is a link to this site from Friends Reunited and it indicates there are, in fact, three schools listed that either directly or indirectly refer to St Michael's College at Hitchin. They are:-

  • St Michael's Preparatory School, Grove Road, Hitchin

  • St Michael's College, Grove Road, Hitchin

  • St Michael's RC Boys' School, Mildmay, Sandown Road, Stevenage.

To put the record straight, all former pupils of the College, who registered on the Stevenage entry, might wish to consider transferring to the Hitchin entry or better still here, since it won't cost you a fiver each year to contact former pupils. All you have to do is visit the St Michael's Directory page.
