Obituary - Margaret Wright (nee Clift)

By Andrew Barclay

Margaret worked at Mvumi as a midwifery tutor from 1974 till she retired in 1982. Margaret was always great fun to work will and had a twinkle in her eye and an infectious laugh. She was a loving positive friendly caring welcoming person.

She worked hard to train her students at Mvumi and was well liked by staff and students. She was known affectionately by her students as Bibi (grandmother) or Mdala Clift (a term given to a respectable old lady) She also ran Bible studies for the students. I am sure there are many midwives across Tanzania who owe a lot to her.

She went out of her way to make new missionaries welcome and at home. When we first went out to Mvumi she made us very welcome and we joined in the rota for sharing lunch with the other single missionaries. She always enjoyed going for a walk to the local lake in free time and was a keen bird watcher. I remember joining her and others on several occasions sometimes if we got a bit late or lost coming back in near total darkness.

One of her fellow tutors , Peter Kasoni , comments that she was an example not only to the students but also to us all on how a Christian should live and preach by her day to day activities.

Earlier in her life she had worked at Ngora hospital in Uganda again in midwifery. After retirement she married Dr Basil Wright who she had worked with in Uganda and was by then widowed. He sadly died a few years later and Margaret spent her last few year in a residential home near Oxford. She died 5th May 2005
