The Society of Friends of Mvumi Hospital is a charity registered in the United Kingdom (Charity No. 289820) and is dedicated to supporting the work of
Mvumi Hospital in Tanzania. The hospital is run by the Anglican Diocese of Central Tanganyika and is set in a densely populated rural area with 100,000 people living within a 25 km radius. Most of the local people are subsistence farmers. The average life span is only 46 years and over 25% of children die before the age of five. Mvumi Hospital is the only hospital in Dodoma Rural District and caters to the needs of over 400,000 people in an area where tropical diseases and malnutrition are endemic. The hospital has 280 beds and is an important training institution providing training for nurses, midwives, clinical officers, laboratory technicians, and ophthalmic nurses and assistants. The Friends of Mvumi:-
1. Provide valuable financial assistance for capital projects such as the renovation of wards, the purchase of a lorry and the building of facilities to produce sterile supplies and intravenous fluids.
2. A significant proportion of the hospital's on-going revenue costs are also reduced by the provision of drugs, medical and hospital equipment. Salary supplements are paid to trained staff to attract key workers such as doctors, nurses and laboratory technicians to work in a difficult rural location. Student nurses from poor families are given sponsorship and assistance with their training costs.
The Friends also co-ordinate special appeals. Currently the Friends are seeking to raise funds for a project to improve the hospital water supply, which will include sinking a new borehole and renewing the distribution pipes and tanks.
The Friends of Mvumi is comprised of individuals and groups who make regular gifts to support the work of the hospital. It is also a channel for one-off gifts and for funds received from special fund raising activities. If you would like to help or find out more about the Friends of Mvumi please send us an email.
