Hunger fund to continue!

In response to the impending famine in the Dodoma Region, The Friends of Mvumi are continuing to collect money for the hunger fund set up in 1997. The fund provides money for patients impoverished by the famine and who cannot therefore afford the cost of medical treatment. In 1998 the fund collected over £42,000 in the U.K. and Tearfund contributed another £10,000. The fund was a huge success, which was testified by the number of attendances at the hospital as described in a report from Dr David McKelvey to the supporters of the hospital outlining the plight of the people in Mvumi. Normally during times of hardship the number of patient's coming to the hospital declines because there is no money to pay for treatment, but in 1998 unprecedented numbers of people came to the hospital so that the outpatient's department was frequently open until late at night. The hunger fund will continue to be used to subsidize medical treatment and drugs and will provide food for patients during their stay at hospital. If you would like to make a donation to the Hunger Fund please contact Kate Goodacre at The Friends of Mvumi.
