NOTES:
This site currently refers directly to only United Kingdom laws, British Standards and experts based in England, Scotland, Wales or Northern Ireland. Most UK consumer safety regulations are enactments of European Union Directives, the principles of which should apply in all member states, to minimise barriers to free market in consumer products (though with remaining exceptions in some important product categories). British Standards that include 'EN' in the number are common standards across the EU. Consumer safety requirements in other parts of the world (including the USA) are codified in very different ways, though the principles of safe design are generally common. Expectations of how to achieve consumer safety are subject to cultural differences. Many of the experts here can advise on requirements across the world within their own field. Safety requirements for consumer facilities and services are currently less standardised, but many experts are willing to inspect or advise on the design of consumer facilities overseas.
North American and Australasian readers should be warned that products are currently referred to by terms in common usage in Great Britain, which in some instances bear no relation to the US English term for the same consumer item.
