AEROFOIL

Wings have an aerofoil shape. Air travelling over the top of a wing has to travel further and faster than air flowing under it. Therefore the air pressure over the wing drops, and the pressure under the wing is greater , creating an upward force called lift.

Wings' lift create an opposite force countering the downward pull of the aircrafts weight.

AFTERBURNER

The Afterburner is a fuction of an engine which is used to dramatically increase the speed of a fighter. Afterburner works by mixing raw fuel with engine exhaust. This can empty a fuel tank very quickly if used to often.

PITCH

Picth is the term used to describe movement aroung an aircraft's lateral axis. This movement is controled by elevators.

RADAR

Radio, Detection and Ranging, RADAR , is a device which detects objects by bouncing a beam of energy off them. Used mainly for navigational purposes.

RAM

Radar absorbant materials is used to soak up energy from enemy radar signals to enhance stealth features of an aircraft.

ROLL

Roll is the term to describe movement around the aircraft's longitudinal axis. This movement is controled by ailerons.

SUPERSONICS

Aircraft which are designed to fly at speed greater than sound, supersonic, cause a problem with sound.

Aircraft travelling at and below the speed of sound, do not create a problem. The aircraft only produces a loud noise.

Aircraft travelling above the speed of sound a very large pressure wave builds up in the atmosphere, creating a supersonic bang. This bang can break windows and remove roof tiles as a result of the rapid change in atmospheric pressure.

YAW

Yaw is the term used to describe movement around the aircraft's lateral axis. This movement is also controled by elevators.
