BELLS ON SUNDAY Errors and Howlers Bell Ringing is a skill which boasts a wealth of technical terms and expressions. Occasionally the BBC announcer (who is reading out a script) says something which a ringer recognises as an error or even a 'howler'. Certainly in our household this is greeted with grunts (well it is almost in the middle of the night) of horror or amusement. Twelve bells ringing Grandsire Triples..., a touch of Sliced Surprise Major, etc, etc. But please spare a little mercy for the BBC - they may have received a recording with several bits of ringing on it, and a long chatty letter explaining exactly what is being rung (but using terminology resembling double dutch to a non-ringing producer). Sometimes a script gets associated with the wrong piece of ringing, or perhaps the typist misreads someone's handwriting. Or maybe the announcer is also still asleep too... But we must not make too much of a fuss or they may decide its not worth the hassle and axe the Bells on Sunday programme completely, which would be a real pity. Just smile quietly and recognise what a complex secret society we ringers are party to. We haven't spent years perfecting an art which could be fully understood by someone in five minutes, have we? |
