Now you are looking at the 1848 VICTORIAN CHURCH. The dilapidated old church had been largely pulled down in 1844 and J.P.HARRISON, a London architect 'of no great note in his profession, but an Oxford man and a scholar' designed this new building. He was a follower of the Gothic revivalist PUGIN and was also designing a new church for John Keble the hymn-writer, at Hursley, in Hampshire. The local houses probably still contain stone and panelling which was auctioned off from the demolished old church. |
