Berkshire, England We had a jolly good ringing day around Newbury in Berkshire recently, with friends from Warwickshire, Oxfordshire and Hampshire. Even the rain, wind and floods made no impact on our enjoyment, thanks to the warm welcome and kind hospitality of our various hosts. The most memorable highlight was a visit to the unique new chime at INKPEN. Some ringers might think these not serious bells but listen to the lovely sound that the local band produced as a demonstration for us before we had a much less successful go ourselves. Inkpen bells were augmented to six by Taylors of Loughborough only last year and the system had to be static chiming because the tower was unsuitable for swinging bells. However, in six months the parishioners have taught themselves to ring very nice methods off music - just listen to a short clip of what I recorded there! The tenor is 6cwt 2qu 27lb. |

Here we are trying to master the new technique of chiming at Inkpen, so ably demonstrated by the local band! (click on picture for sound!) |
Most of the band, assembled at East Ilsley, the frst tower of the day. Lovely bells (but so sound-controlled from outside that my recording is too faint to use). |
