WILD FLOWERS

THE BY-PASS NATURAL HISTORY

 Stately seed heads of Hogweed.

The verges were seeded with non-aggressive grasses and wild flowers. Meadow Cranesbill (blue), Moon Daisy (white), Musk Mallow (pink) and Bird's-foot Trefoil (yellow) were four of the most outstanding species used.

Many other flowers have appeared naturally, some from the seedbank present in the soil and others from seed carried here by wind or other method.

Over a hundred different species have been recorded, - how's that for biodiversity?

In order to keep this richness the main mowing is not done until late August. Verge edges and visibility splays are cut more frequently.
