FROM OUR ROVING CORRESPONDENTS IN APOLDA Roger and Barbara from Lillington went to Germany for a holiday at Easter. They found a GLOCKENMUSEUM (Bell Museum) at Apolda which is a town some 35 miles SW of Leipzig, close to Jena and Weimar. The museum is featured on the Apolda website with opening times etc and is well worth a visit if you are near that area. |

There is no actual bell foundry in Apolda now. J. Ch. Rose set up the first foundry there in 1722, which passed to J.G.Ulrich in 1759 and finally closed in 1948. A second bell foundry was set up in Apolda in 1826, by C.F.Ulrich and became one of the best in Germany, lasting til 1988. |
