SHERBOURNE TEACHING-AIDS

Our latest Shropshire holiday

We keep returning to Shropshire. This time a visit to the new Marches Training Belfry which is the latest development by John Turney and Jan Herraty owners of the Fire Ring a private mini-ring in an old forge building at Hopton Heath. They are becoming well known for their enterprising and useful series of weekend residential courses for ringers.

Full details of their courses

The Marches Training Belfry is a ring of six. Six proper ropes in a nice circle. In a carpetted barn. The 'bells' are six

identical dumbells (i.e. the treble is no lighter to ring than the tenor). The 'bells' are merely lumps of metal attached to the wheels, so they have no clappers. The bells' sounds are produced by a simulator which takes its timings from the swinging wheels. You can see the reflective triggor strip on two of the wheels in the above photo. Ideal practice tower, easy bells, no sounds outside, no neighbour problems...

On Sunday Morning we rang again at Ludlow, always a fine experience. They have a new website well worth a visit, especially the historical section where all the tower's archive material is reproduced.
