The Young People's Cycle Tour

Each summer for the past nearly 30 years, Revd Geoff Stickland and his wife Ruth, from Quedgeley, Glos, have organised a week cycling / ringing holiday for young people (of all ages). After looking longingly at the programme for some time, this year, Ted and I finally took the plunge, and joined them. What a great week - excellent ringing, 30++ jolly good towers, nearly 200 miles of cycling even us oldies could just about cope with (nothing you could call a real hill in the whole journey), lovely homely and welcoming accommodation (Shallowford House) and what can I say about the company! Here's the group photograph kindly provided by Isabel Murphy.

Some members of the tour really did almost take the plunge, into the canal...

'Our Leader' said, its a nice ride along the canal towpath between Gnosall and Church Eaton. The more gullible of us pushed our bikes through mud, water and vegetation for about two miles, vowing never to believe a word he said again. Here are Geoff Strickland and Liz Pearse at the end of the marathon, about to climb back up onto the road and head along for the next tower (only 45 minutes late). Shortly after this, Geoff's chain broke... surely not even he deserved such divine retribution?
