Matching Pair of Platters
By John Coley
Two squares of Sycamore were clamped, with spacers between them. One corner was taken off the clamped squares and a piece of one inch square Oak was glued to the diagonal from which the corner was cut. The two corners of sycamore were then glued back onto the other side of the oak.Whilst the pieces were still clamped a small pilot hole ( 1/16") was drilled to indicate the central position of the 1" oak dowel.
When the glue was set the squares were unclamped and a 1" hole was drilled in each piece for the dowels which were then glued in.
The centre of each piece was found, 11" circles carefully scribed to maintain equality of pattern on each, roughly trimmed on the band saw, and then turned on the lathe.
