Which Breeds Are Affected?

Over 60 breeds of dogs and cats have recognised hearing problems. Some breeds are more at risk than others. These include the Dalmatian (21%) , English Setter, Border Collie Bull Terrier, Australian Cattle Dog and Cavalier King Charles Spaniel. Dogs with a white coat colour with blue eyes are more likely to be deaf. A dog may be born deaf (congenital deafness), or it develop a hearing loss in later life (acquired deafness). Some types of deafness are hereditary ie. passed on from one generation to another.

Dogs and cats with severe hearing loss do not respond to loud noises, or owners' calling. They may be difficult to train and some with partial deafness may have problems localising sounds.
