Labour 'ends the Nanny State'
with new health targets.

Dear NHS,

"It is not for governments to tell people how to behave".

But we will increase cigarette prices, end advertising and provide information on the risks of smoking, poor diet and lack of exercise. People will be told to check the safety of their appliances, install smoke alarms, drive safely, wear cycle helmets, wear seatbelts, not drink and drive, cover up in the sun, protect others from second-hand smoke, and attend breast and cervical screening.
Yours
Tessa Jowell,
minister for public health

Satirical Card of the Month July 1998
Tessa Jowell celebrates the NHS's 50th Birthday with A VISION of a healthier Britain, which we are told marks an end to the 'Nanny State' approach which applied with the last government.
