Review

A departure from the usual WWII and modern figures for Dragon sees 'Sgt. Jones' from the Zulu wars representing an NCO from the battle at Rorke's Drift, where the soldiers from the British 24th Regiment of Foot, together with Commissariat and Natal Police, fought with great courage and valour against a vastly superior number of Zulu warriors.

I like this figure! It is one that I personally have been hoping would be made, and here it is.

The head sculpt has a striking resemblance to Sean Connery as he appeared in the film 'Hunt for Red October'.

The items of uniform and equipment are made to the usual Dragon high standard with most of them being new designs.

There is fantastic attention to detail in the etched brass sphinx collar ciphers, the 24's on the epaulettes and the minute details on the belt buckle and tunic buttons (you will need exceptional eyesight or a magnifying glass to see the detail though).

The shoulder straps are a bit fiddly to get on but the effort is well worth it in the end.

Jones is armed with a delightful representation of the Martini-Henry breach loading rifle and a wicked looking bayonet as issued to NCO's. The bayonet will fix to the rifle which is a nice touch.

Now for a few gripes. The service helmet although probably quite near the correct shape appears to be a little on the small side. The chin strap although made with leatherette material has those crappy silver hooks as used on the WWII German helmets - shame on you Dragon, you could have done better than that!

Dragon have also provided a second hat in a weathered tan colour although it has no helmet plate. My only question is, why?

In another example of this figure I have seen the sleeve cuff detail on the 'inside' of the arm instead of the outside, I hope it is not a recurring problem with Dragon's quality control.

However, that said, my overall opinion of the figure is that it is terrific. Now if only a Chard or Bromhead figure, or possibly a Zulu warrior figure, could come along.......

Overall: Great figure, get one for your collection.
