Sometimes it's impossible or simply uneconomic to provide a remote location with a mains
electricity supply. In these situations a stand-alone energy system, comprising photovoltaic
solar panels or a wind turbine - or in some cases both - can provide sufficient power for
buildings or specialist equipment like navigation aids, radio masts and monitoring systems.
A bank of batteries is charged by the solar array or wind turbine, storing the energy until
it is needed. A diesel motor generator can also be incorporated to help satisfy peak
demands or provide a boost during poor light conditions or low wind speeds.
Computer modelling of a site's meteorological conditions enable each system to be carefully
designed and built for maximum efficiency, ensuring that power is available whenever it's
needed, and the use of good quality components means that maintenance costs are low.
