Grafenort

We set out to walk down the riverside path to Grafenort, but it was still closed after the previous years floods. So after going round in circles we decided to go on the high level route to Grafenort over a high col (1747m) overlooking the Lutersee.. Whilst the up was fine - save for a very muddy track leading to the Zingel alm on the way to the col, the down was very steep and not to be recommended when you are trying out new insoles. Luckily the big toes survived without undue stiffness.

Leading up to the col the path was mainly through forest to start then open country. On the Grafenort side of the col just past the Lutersee was an area of Limestone Karst, this led down to some tracks through pastures before the path descended steeply through scrub and forest to the valley. Sections of this path were not too well marked. It was another rainy day so we were pleased to find that we only had about ten minutes to wait for the train to take us back up the valley to Engelberg.

A train shot - especially for Stan.
The fungi were impressive - the cool damp weather ensured that there were plenty around. Flickr

Initially we had wondered if we would get across but it turned out to be easier than it looked at first sight. Flickr
The scenary after the col was quite different to elsewhere.
