The weather was remaining hot and sunny so we decided to do a walk from the top of the Jochpass over to the
lakes of Engstlensee and Tannensee. These two lakes combined with those of Truebsee and
Melchsee-Frutt form
the focus of the Four Lakes High Level Walk. You can walk all
the way from Engelberg to Melchsee-Frutt, this
will take about 7 hours walking time and you would be left with a 2 to 2.5 hr journey back to Engelberg by
cable car, bus and train. The cable cars and chair lifts allow you to have more relaxed options.
As we were still not firing on all cylinders we took one of the easier options. We bought a return ticket
between Engelberg and Engstlensee which cost us 32 CHF each. We took the Cable Car up to the Truebsee then
walked to the other end of the lake to get the chair lift to the top of the Jochpass.
From the Jochpass (2207m)
we walked along a path that kept up high above the Engstlensee and brought us out by
Tannalp. This was a very
pleasant path with some excellent views and it was reasonably quiet. However this changed at Tannalp where we
came across lots of people. This is because there is road access to this area from both the Melchtal and the
Gental. This is a shame as it detracts from the beautiful setting that these lakes are in. We walked along
to the Tannensee before returning to Tannalp and taking a path that descended to Engstlenalp where there is
another very popular hut. It is about a 10 to 15 minute walk from here
to the Engstlensee and you leave the
crowds behind. We liked this lake as it was a lot quieter. The Engstlensee chair lift station is uphill from
the end of the lake.
We took the chair lift up to the Jochpass and enjoyed a drink at the hut
there sitting on the terrace. It was
chair lift and cable car via Truebsee down to Engelberg.
