Wirzweli

Today we walked in one of the areas down the valley, Wirzweli. Wirzweli is a small village situated above Dallenwil. It is a farming area with the Stanzerhorn to the north and Avrigrat to the south. These hills are can be climbed from Wirzweli but we were going to do an easier walk. To get to Wirzweli you catch a train from Engelberg to Dallenwil and then the cable car from Dallenwil to Wirzweli (c17 CHF each return 1/2 price).

Just as we commenting on the fact that Swiss in general were polite but not as friendly as the Austrians, a lass pulled up and offered us a lift from the train station up to the cable car. Its about a 15 minute walk upwards and so the lift was very welcome. We discovered later that this is a general service available to anyone arriving at the train station - there is a number to call.

Leaving the cable car station at Wirweli (1221m) we walked south via Horn and a forested ridge to Gummenalp (1579m). We then walked north to Ober Holzwang before descending down through forest and farmland to Wirzweli. We had a ride on the summer toboggan run which is included in the cable car fare, and drinks and ice cream at the Gasthaus Avriblick before returning to Dallenwil and Engelberg.
