Today we both felt a bit more energetic and decided to walk in the
Niederrickenbach walking area.
The walk was to take us up a distinctive peak Brisen which is one of the highest peaks in this
area and affords excellent views over Lake Luzern. To get to Niederrickenbach we caught the train
from Engelberg to Niederrickenbach Tal station. From here it is a couple of minutes walk to the cable
car station which takes you up to the village. Return fare from Engelberg was 18.40 CHF each with
half price card.
From Niederrickenbach we walked to the Alpboden-Haldigrat
chair lift station (20 CHF return each).
We ended up sandwiched bewtween a Swiss school party and a Dutch walking group in the queue for the
chairlift. There was quite a wait, about 45 minutes, as it only took 6 people at a time, with a few
minutes wait in between.
From the Haldigrat station (1950m) we walked up the grassy ridge to the top of Brisen (2404m), From
the summit we walked down to a col Steinalper Jochli and then walked along a rocky path across the
west slopes of Brisen over another col and then on a path which led down to the
Brisenhaus hut.
From here it would have been easier to walk down to the village (also could have bought a single
ticket on the cable car), however we walked back to the Haldigrat station and got the cable car
down to Alpboden and walked back to Niederrickenbach. We really enjoyed our walk in this area
and had thoughts about returning the next day however it was bad weather so we stayed in Engelberg.
