Our holiday

Fuschl was a spring holiday destination in 2008. Fuschl was an extra holiday as it was a 80th birthday treat for Dennis's mum. We also invited her sister along as well. We managed to get out most days though to do a walk, not as strenous as we would do on our own but a very enjoyable time was had by all.

Fuschl Village and Ameneties.

Fuschl (670m) is a village on the eastern shore of the Fuschlsee lake. It is in an area called the Salzkammergut - Austria's Lake District and is very close to Salzburg. Fuschl is also close to the Wolfgangsee with its popular resorts of St Gilgen and St Wolfgang. Fuschl's main claim to fame is that it is the home of Red Bull whose headquarters are in very modern buildings on the outskirts of the village.

Fuschl is fairly compact with most hotels, shops and amenities in the centre or alongside the lake.

In the centre of the village there is the tourist information office, bank, post office and main bus stop. The tourist office is the place to get the stamping cards for the walking badges.

There are a couple of supermarkets in the village as well as a number of craft and gift shops. There is an outdoor leisure area with outdoor swimming pool Fuschlseebad by the lake, this was being rebuilt during our stay but is now open. Also by the lake are places to hire boats as well as bathing areas. There is a bandstand in the village centre where the local band gives a weekly concert in the season. This is well worth going to as it was one of the most enjoyable concerts of this type we have been to. At the end of most of the walks we treated ourselves to afternoon tea, two nice cafes in Fuschl with excellent cakes were the Rosengarten and Cafe Mozart.

We stayed at the Mohrenwirt Hotel a 4 star hotel in the centre of the village, right by the main bus stop. We had a room with balcony at the back of the hotel, Dennis's mum and aunt had a large room with balcony at the front of the hotel. The food was very enjoyable a substantial buffet breakfast and the evening meal was four courses and a salad buffet with three main course choices including a fish and/or vegetarian choice most nights. The hotel has a small but modern leisure area on the top floor of the hotel. Once a week there is a welcome drink where they give you a tour of the hotel kitchens and you can talk to the chefs. This is the first time we have had the opportunity to do this and found it very interesting. Also once a week you can have free tea and cake in the afternoon. We found the Mohrenwirt to be a comfortable and pleasant place to stay with good food and we would recommend it.

Our holiday was with Inghams You could make your own arrangements and drive there or fly to Salzburg, then Post Bus to Fuschl.

Transport

There is a Post Bus to Salzburg and to the Wolfgangsee. The main bus stop in the village has information screens giving the destination and time of the next bus. The bus (Service 150) is hourly and takes about 40 minutes to Salzburg and 25 minutes to St Gilgen.

On the Fuschlsee there is the electric powered ferry Fuschlerin which goes around the lake. On the nearby larger lake of the Wolgangsee there are regular boat services

There are no cable cars in Fuschl but there is the Zwolferhorn lift at St Gilgen and the Schafberg mountain railway from St Wolfgang.

You may consider buying the Salzkammergut Adventure Card (4.90E in 2008) which gives a reduction on a large number of attractions in the Salzkammergut.

Walking

There are some walks from Fuschl and with the use of the bus to the Wolfgangsee there are a lot more possibilities. Although the hills are not particularly high they are quite craggy and with the lakes make an attractive walking area. Although we would probably not come to this area for our main 2 week walking holiday it would be good to return to spend a week's walking in the area.

All the walks that we did were covered by the Kompass map 17 at scale 1:50000 "Salzburger Seengebiet Kobernausserwald" There is a very good walking map published and available from the local tourist office.

There are local walking badges for Fuschl. The stamping book "Fuschlsee Hiking Pass" is available at the tourist office. Points are assigned to various walks which will have a number of stamping points en route. One of the highlights of the holiday was Dennis's mum and aunt getting the gold badge, we only got the silver.
