| For our first walk of the holiday we chose a fairly easy walk to the hamlet of Apriach and back. From the hotel we walked along the main road for a short distance before picking up footpath number 9. This passed by a few buildings and then crossed grass meadows to reach the small chapel at Fliess - Fliesskapelle. The views back to Heiligenbut with the snow capped Grossglockner in the background were impressive. From the chapel we followed paths 7 and 9 via Schachnern to reach the "Stockmuehlen" above Apriach. The Stockmuehlen are mills that use water power for the purpose of grinding wheat. These are a feature of the area. We followed the path down into the village past the quaint fire station. Also in the village is the Mentlhof museum which depicts a typical farm house of the region. From Apriach we walked down path 7, and a short distance past Glanzner took the path down to Eichorn and the main road. Crossing the road there was a small refreshment hut by the car park. There is an impressive modern bridge which we used to cross the river. A short diversion can be taken on a path that gives good close up views of a waterfall. We followed the path alongside the west bank of the river to Hadergasse and from there crossed back across the river and took the path up (somewhat mean at the end of a walk) to Heiligenblut and the hotel. | |
