| Heiligenblut lies at the foot of Schareck, which rises north from the village. A cable car links Heiligenblut to the top of Schareck. For our first walk, we walked up rather than use the cable car - we took the post bus in the direction of Franz Josef Hohe, and alighted at stop "Kehre Sieben und Zwanzig" (corner 27). There is a bus stop where the road crosses the Fliess stream. We walked along the road for a short distance, before taking path 8a, which runs along the Grosser Fliessbach before joining path 8. At the point before the valley turns up towards the east, we crossed the river by a small footbridge - not that easy to spot from the main track. The path then ascended steeply up the grassy slopes before levelling out, and turning south to join the main ridge of Schareck. There are some excellent views from this ridge - down the valley and sideways to the surrounding mountains. From the main ridge we joined path 6, this took us past the cable car station, and on to the summit. The summit is an excellent viewpoint. In the second week of our holiday we returned to Schareck. This time we took the cable car and had hoped to walk to Hochtor via the Geotrail, however snow and ice stopped play due to lack of crampons. We took a few pictures from the summit - quite a difference from the previous week! | |
