Franz Josefs Hohe (2418m)

Franz Josefs Hohe is one of the most popular tourist attractions in Austria. It lies beneath the Grossglockner, which at 3798m is the highest mountain in Austria. Franz Josef Hohe is reached along an offshoot of the Grossglockner high alpine road. There are a number of museums and exhibitions as well as cafes, gift shops and a multi-storey car park. Today we decided to walk up to Franz Josef Hohe, and then catch the bus back down to Heiligenblut. Leaving the village we took path 1. Initially this followed a road, before branching off onto footpaths, along the Haritzersteig and Alpenblumensteig to the Briccius Kapelle. This was a lovely path, and became our favourite option between Briccius and Heiligenblut. Path 1 joined the Grossglockner Road by the Karl Volkert Haus. This is one of a number of mountain huts/inns that provide food and accomodation. We walked along the road for a short distance, and then turned back onto path 1 past a small traditonal hut, the Pasterzerhaus. It was disconcerting being watched as we laboured up the steep climb up to Franz Josefs Hohe, and quite a shock to realise how many day trippers there were. The viewing tower has high power tele lenses, and so its possible to see climbers reaching the top of the Gross Glockner.
