| Retschalpe is an area of high meadows on the slopes of the mountains that rise south west from the village. On both the local map and the Kompass maps the path is marked by small red dots. This normally indicates a path that may not be way well marked which might be difficult. Fortunately in the hotel, Inghams kept a 'walks' book for guests comments, and someone had made very favourable comments, so we decided to give it a go. It turned out to be one of the best walks of the holiday. From the hotel we walked down to the river and crossed by the campsite, turning right following the river, until a grassy track left the main path on the left. We followed this track for a short distance and then turned left on a path which entered the forest. The path climbs up steeply through the forest, a seat is provided part way up at a good view point. After climbing about 600m the path becomes less steep, and enters the high meadows of the Retschalpe. The path goes across the meadows and onto a col below a small peak called the Jochelkopf. We made a small diversion up a grassy ridge to the summit of the Jochelkopf (2347m) to take in the views. Returning to the col, we then walked along a plateau to another col. From this col we descended to the Gossnitz valley. The path joins path 3 which took us down to the Wirtsbauernalm. The Wirtsbauernalm is a traditional farmhouse that serves food and drink. The seating is outside on a terrace, and we enjoyed a glass of beer each, before continuing on path 3 to Wolfgangskapelle and back to Heiligenblut. | |
