Salmhutte

You are at: Home > Heiligenblut walks > Salmhutte

The Salmhutte is one of the oldest mountain huts in Austria. It is on the route that the climbers took on the first ascent of the Grossglockner. This hut can be reached by walking from Heiligenblut, but is a long way and the return is by the same way. Fortunately this hut can be reached from the Glocknerhaus and this is the way we chose. We took the path down to the lake "Stausee Margaritze", the path follows the lake shore, then as it turns to the west we took a small path which headed up slopes to reach the Stockerscharte (2442m). As we were walking up the path it started to snow - fortunately the path kept clear for us. We continued along the path (Wiener Hohenweg) which runs across the slopes of the mountain parallel to the Leiterbach. After a while we reached the Salmhutte. We were glad to get inside away from the cold and snow. Unfortunately the service in the hut wasn't too good, they forgot our order even though there were only a few people in the hut. When it did arrive, the Erbensuppe "pea soup" wasn't very good (powdered version). Leaving the hut we descended from the hut on path 5 which followed the Leiterbach down the valley. Crossing over the river we took the path leading to the Trogalm, and onto Briccius Kapelle following path 1 back to Heiligenblut.
