For the first walk of the holiday we decided to go onto the Penken mountain which overlooks Mayrhofen. This would be an easy walk at a gentle pace, and would give us the chance to get our bearings of the area.
The Penkenbahn cable car station is on the main street of Mayrhofen, where we purchased our Zillertal Active cards for 12 days. We took the cable car to the top staion at 1780m.
From the top station we walked on a new adventure path, complete with viewing points, paraglider harness swings and a fixed mountain bike (open air gym!) to the Penkenalm. From the Penkebalm we took the panaroma path along the ridge to the Penkenjochhaus 2095m, the highest point. Since we were here 17 years ago they had constructed a small reservoir encircled by a path with seats.
From the Penkenjochhaus we took the steep path descending to the middle station of the Finkenberger Almbahn cable car. This took us past one of the launch sites for the paragliders, this seems to have become a popular activity. From the middle station we took the cable car down to Finkenberg.
We walked up to the Devil's Bridge, but we were disappointed as it had a unloved feel about it, wheras 17 years ago it had been a significant tourist destination. We were quite saddened by our stroll around Finkenberg, it had grown a lot since 1992, and seemed to us to have lost its identity a some what. From Finkenberg we walked back down to Mayrhofen, stopping for a cup of tea at the Kramerwirt before returning to our hotel.
There are additional photos in our Mayrhofen flickr set.
